- 1st Reading – Zephaniah 3:14-18a
- 2nd Reading – Philippians 4:4-7
- Gospel – Luke 3:10-18
The 3rd Sunday of Advent is traditionally called “Gaudete” Sunday. A term which comes from our second reading today meaning – “Rejoice, the Lord is near.” This season of Advent is a time for us to prepare for His coming.
Both the 1st and 2nd readings carry messages of joy to their readers. “The Lord is in your midst; you shall fear no evil.” Zephaniah 3:14
“Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice, the Lord is at hand.” Plil 4L45
We are preparing for Christmas. This is the 3rd Sunday of Advent, and definitely a time to rejoice.
We should pay close attention to the words of John the Baptist in today’s Gospel. “He who has two coats, let him share with the one who has none. And he who has food, let him do likewise.” A message for all of us to help the less fortunate in whatever way we’re able.
Again, from the Gospel: “Tax collectors and you who lend money. Collect no more than what is appointed to you. Soldiers – Rob no one by violence, or by false accusation and be content with your wages.”
In other words – do not cheat or defraud. Avoid rash judgments and defamation of character. Be kind, just and forgiving.
Practice these things and you will experience a profound feeling of joy. A feeling which is a foretaste of the joys that come with the birth of Jesus and we will be able to “Rejoice in the Lord always.”
